New Facebook changes and what they mean for marketing professionals

Monday, October 31st, 2011

In recent weeks, new changes to users’ Facebook profiles, with the arrival of the new ‘Timeline’ feature, have caused much debate on social media sites. But what other changes are afoot, and will they have a profound effect on the way marketing professionals carry out their jobs? It appears so.

A recent article in Utalkmarketing details the new developments very well, and is well worth a read. But here’s a quick summary of the important points:

  1. Recent changes instigated by Facebook mean that in order to show up on a user’s news feed, brands are going to have to work much harder. Gone will be the days where simply ‘liking’ a business’s page means its content appears on your homepage.
  2. As well as getting tough on spam marketing, Facebook will stop showing posts from pages that are dry or lack regular content.
  3. Apps will be the new driving force in creating brand promotion. With users being able to see what their friends are up to via the newsfeed (for example what music they might be listening to via Spotify), businesses ought to be thinking carefully about integrating with Apps associated with their brand. The new number one!

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

One of the best things about life at Handle Recruitment is the fact we get to work with such a fantastic variety of companies operating in some really cutting edge sectors. We also love to keep on top of what our favourite employers are doing and last week, a very special client, the Official Charts Company, launched its new identity and a completely redesigned consumer facing website.

The new identity combines two vibrantly coloured arrows which overlap to create a secret “1” representing, of course, the most important number in the music charts. And you’ll be seeing a lot more of it as the company plans to roll the “1” icon out as a kitemark of data quality and accuracy.

Additionally, the relaunch of theofficialcharts.com – on an all new digital platform – showcases the very best of current charts music – as well as some fantastic retro legends.

It’s described as a buzzing hub for music fans who will able to search the Official Singles and Albums Charts archive on every page of the site, and interact with other music lovers through its social media and community features. If that isn’t enough, the site also features news, video interviews, current and retrospective features, artist chart profiles, galleries and competitions.

We think the new website is amazing, but don’t just take our word for it! Go and have a look yourself – we’re sure you’ll be as hooked as we are in no time.

Why not share with us your favourite number “1” of all time on our comments section?

A black (twitter) cloud over advertising?

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

As social media continues to shape and influence how we communicate, so too does it change the way in which products are advertised and promoted. It may not be as simple as the obvious TV and brand sponsorship partnerships we so often see, but social media is increasingly being used to advertise and create brand awareness.

This is all the more poignant with the recent news that a UK-based PR agency has had a case brought against them by the Office of Fair trading (OFT). They were discovered to be paying people to write about certain products.  The OFT concluded that they felt the marketing and online advertising , in the form of comments about services and products in blogs and on twitter, was deceptive.

What the OFT want to see is that when bloggers and Twitter users endorse a product they must state a relationship with the brand.  In the UK, one example (across Twitter) is Liz Hurley. Whilst she has been the face of Estee Lauder for 17 years her Twitter page has no mention of her association. But recently she has started to talk about certain products within the range that she particularly likes.  Coincidence or not??? (more…)

Feel the benefit

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Here at Handle we do like to feel as though we go that extra mile. And to prove it we decided that some of our female clients deserved just a little a bit of TLC. Cue Lisa from our Office division who organised a fantastic night of pampering courtesy of our friends at Benefit Cosmetics.

Their team of professional make-up artists arrived at our offices, armed with lipsticks, blushers and eye shadows in all colours imaginable and worked their magic!

While we were given expert tips on how to perfect that smoky eye and achieve that healthy glow, there was also time for a glass or two of bubbly – and some delicious cupcakes from Lola’s bakery.

Our clients from from ASOS, EMAP, PPL and Creston certainly seemed to enjoy their makeovers -  cakes, bubbly and make-up – what more could a girl ask for?

So you want a job in marketing?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

The recession may be (hopefully) behind us and there’s certainly a lot more recruitment activity around but it’s still a really competitive area – particularly in our specialist areas of media, music, film and high visibility brands. So what can you do to make yourself stand out from the crowd? Here are our top five tips:

• If you haven’t had direct experience of brands within media and entertainment you will at least need to demonstrate a real passion, interest and understanding of the marketing issues involved.
• Be aware that creativity on its own is not enough – there’s a real emphasis on insight and analysis coupled with creative flair and thinking ‘outside the box’
• There’s a big focus on communication skills – there are some big personalities in our sector!
• Most interviews will now entail some form of presentation – so be prepared to prove your worth and demonstrate that you will be a good investment.
• There are a range of competencies needed:  project management, commercial awareness, and strategic vision – make sure that every relevant skill set is on your CV.
